Walter D. Filler, 85, Greensburg, passed away on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Greensburg.
Born, November 15, 1925 in Clinton, Illinois, he was the son of Jesse W. and Lena Mae (Dusenberry) Filler.
Walt graduated from Sandusky High School, then joined the Navy and served in the South Pacific in WW II. When he returned to Greensburg, he served as a lieutenant with the Indiana State Excise Dept. He owned the "Dog House Tavern" for several years, then sold life insurance for the Commonwealth Insurance Co. He then sold real estate for Shel Smith and retired in 1989 as superintendant of the Greensburg Water Works.
He was a member of the Sandusky Methodist Church, the VFW, American Legion, the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Shriners. He had also been a member of the Eagles, Elks, Rotary and several other service organizations in the community over the years.
He served as precinct committee man for the Republican party. He was a former county treasurer of the Republican central committee. He served as the military county service officer for over 20 years.
He was married to Shirley "Kay" Stevens on November 3, 1961 and she survives.
He is also survived by one son, Mike Filler, Greensburg; one brother, Richard Filler, Las Vegas; two sisters, Roberta Hunt, Greensburg, Sandra Bottoms, Greensburg; five grandchildren, Kimberly (Doug) Schlereth, Timothy Filler, Nicole (Mike) Reed, Braden Filler, Tristen Filler; six great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Arnold Stevens; sister-in-law, Jan Tenneyson; two daughter-in-laws, Linda Lower, Jan Filler.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sons, Larry Filler, Garry Filler, Kenneth Filler; two grandsons, David Filler, Steven Filler; two brothers and seven sisters.
Visitation will be from 11-1:00 p.m. Thursday at the Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 30, 2010 at the Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg with Rev. Richard Waddle officiating.
Interment will be held in the South Park Cemetery in Greensburg.
The American Legion Post #129 will conduct military graveside services.
