Phyllis M. Southworth age 91, passed away at the Heritage House in Greensburg on January 3, 2011. Phyllis was born on September 21, 1919 in Kentucky. She was the daughter of the late William and Dora Ochs. Phyllis was born and raised in Rush County and graduated as valedictorian of Raleigh High School class of 1937. She married the late William (Roscoe) Southworth in 1939. They were longtime residents of Raleigh, Indiana and owned and operated Southworth Grocery in the 1950’s. She is preceded in death by her husband Roscoe, daughter, Roxy Pick, two brothers, William Gene Ochs and Max Allen Ochs. She leaves behind a son Phillip Southworth and his wife Betty, Greensburg; son-in-law, Fred Pick, Crofton. MD; four grandchildren, Jeff (Karrie) Southworth, Noblesville, Julie (Geoff) Graue, Noblesville, Sheri Pick, and Tami (Jim) Simpson, both in Maryland; two great grandchildren, Jami Lephew and Sierra Graue and several nieces and nephews.
Phyllis worked as a hostess for the Durbin Hotel in Rushville and later was employed for many years by Chase P. Mauzy Insurance also in Rushville. She was a member of the Raleigh Christian Church and the Raleigh Community Club, where she served as secretary. She moved to Greensburg in 1995 and was a member of the Eagles, the Senior Center, a volunteer for the Greensburg Hospital Auxiliary and held several part time jobs including, hostess at the Best Western and receptionist at Greensburg Audiology.
Phyllis loved dancing and was a regular at the Raleigh Community Club dances, the Eagles and the Greensburg Senior Center. She enjoyed playing cards and Scrabble and traveling including a memorable trip to Europe with her granddaughter. Visitation will be held at the Porter Oliger Pearson Funereal Home, Franklin St. Greensburg on Thursday, January 6th from 2-4:00 p.m. and the funeral will follow at 4:00 p.m. Her final resting place will be at the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Raleigh.
