On Sunday, December 2, Don and Barb Horan left their home on earth and entered into their heavenly home, where they were met by their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, as well as family and friends who had gone before them.
Donald “Don” Paul Horan was born July 13, 1966 in Greensburg, the 9th of 10 children, to James and Teresa Horan. Don was a lifelong resident of Greensburg, and graduated from Greensburg Community High School in 1984. Upon graduating, Don went to work for Shirk’s International.
Barbara “Barb” Lynn Martin was born February 19, 1968 in Greensburg to Richard (Dick) and Carolyn Hineman Martin. Barb, too, was a lifelong resident of Greensburg, and graduated from Greensburg Community High School in 1986. After high school, Barb attended Indiana Business College where she obtained her Associates Degree in business (’88). She was employed at Kova before she went to work at REMC . Eventually she left the workforce to stay at home with her children.
Being best friends, Don and Barb married on May 14th, 1988 and together they built a life with each other. After leaving his mark on several local businesses, including The Office Shop, Hadler-Chrysler-Plymouth, and Fifth-Third Bank, Don bought Collection Associates Incorporated in 1998 and developed it into the business it is today. After selling the business in 2008, he retired and together with his wife they lived a life in which they continually gave back to their church and community. Don and Barb both recognized that all they had, came from God, and were always willing to generously share their blessings with others.
Both Don and Barb served on numerous boards and committees, always seeking to make sure this was a community their family could enjoy for years to come. Over the years, Don gave time and offered guidance to the Decatur County Fair Board, Greensburg Redevelopment Board, Decatur County United Fund, DCMH Foundation Board, DCMH Capital Campaign and the Decatur County Community Foundation. Barb, too, was actively involved in Tri Kappa, and the St. Mary’s Hot Meals Program. She also volunteered her time for Girls on the Run, Decatur County YMCA Board and Bread of Life. They were both heavily involved members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, serving on numerous committees, and were actively involved with the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. Don was a member of the board and together with his wife, served as co-chairs of the Catholic Community Foundation.
Of all the success they achieved throughout life, their proudest accomplishments were their four daughters: Rebecca (19), Olivia (17), Regan (14) and Adrienne(13), who survive. Don and Barb will forever be remembered as devoted parents, loving members of their families, and friends to the community. They were generous donors to a number of foundations and enjoyed serving others, but more than anything, they enjoyed the relationships they had with their family and friends. Don and Barb both loved to laugh and made many memories with those they held close.
Don was preceded in death by his father, James Horan. In addition to his four beautiful daughters, he is survived by his mother, Teresa Horan of Greensburg; brothers, Dennis (Ann Marie) Horan of Millhousen, Tony Horan of New Palestine, Joe (Eileen) Horan of Indianapolis, Bill (Dawn) Horan of Bluffton, and Tom (Suzanne) Horan of Greensburg; sisters, Sharon (John) Kreuz of Columbus, OH, Kathy (Brian) Cunningham of Valparaiso, Nancy (Kenny) Buening and Sue (Gerald) Huey, all of Greensburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Barb was preceded in death by her father, Dick Martin. In addition to her four beautiful daughters, she is survived by her mother, Carolyn Martin; Grandpa, Otto Hineman; brother, Don (Debbie) Martin of Greensburg; sister, Nancy (Frank) Mazza of Floyds Knobs, IN; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A combined visitation with the families of Steve & Denise Butz will be from 4pm-9pm on Thursday, December 6th at St. Mary’s Catholic School (south/new campus). A combined memorial mass celebrating the lives of Don and Barb, as well as their dear friends, Steve & Denise Butz, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday December 7th, at Greensburg Community High School Gymnasium with Rev. John Meyer officiating.
Interment will be held at the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery following the mass.
