Walter E. Pleak

September 24, 1914 — February 6, 2013

The Lord welcomed home Walter Eugene Pleak, 98 of Greensburg on February 6, 2013. Walter was preceded in death by his father Harry Logan Pleak and mother Creetle Elizabeth (Voiles), his brother Robert D. (Martha) Pleak, and his sister Dorothy (Elwood) Burkholz. Walter was born September 24, 1914 in Decatur County. He married his beloved wife, Freda Mae (Volz) on July 26, 1941. She survives. Walter was a devoted husband, father of Cheryl S. (Rock) Linville, and Richard A. (Terri) Pleak, and grandfather of Sonja R. Linville of Greensburg and Rockford Alex Linville of Phoenix, AZ. Walter has several wonderful nieces and nephews. Walter served the US Army during WWII completing a 3 ½ year deployment to the Eastern Front. Upon returning, he ventured into civilian life working for National Dairy selling buttermilk to farmers earning the title “Mr. Buttermilk.” Walter was a natural in the business realm, serving the customers. In 1958, Walter and Freda bought Corbett & Craig, the oldest hardware store in Greensburg. Pleak’s Do-It Center is still where all locals can find the entire Pleak family! Regardless of what you needed, Walter would try his best to fix it, or find it. Walter leaves a legacy of hard work and a good sense of humor. These notable traits have been carried on by his family and Pleak employees. Walter was a member at St. Mary’s Catholic Church for 71 years. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, and the Elks Club. Walter had the opportunity to raise the American flag on Veteran’s Day at MainSource Bank 2012. His secret to sustaining long life was God first, family second, a lot of onions, and a little bit of vinegar every now and then. Visitation will be held at Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, February 10 with a Rosary Service beginning at 1:30 p.m. A celebration of life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 11 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev.
