Robert F. Shaw, 90, formerly of 518 N. Lincoln St., died Saturday, February 7, 2009 at Morning Breeze in Greensburg, In.
Born July 28, 1918 in Greensburg to the late Alma Shaw, he was raised by his grandparents, the late Sam and Hazel Davis, after his mother’s death when he was a young boy.
He graduated from Greensburg High School in 1936.
He was a member of the Elks, the V.F.W., American Legion Post 129, and St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
On February 16, 1947 he was united in marriage to Elvera Hoene in Batesville. She preceded him in death on August 5, 1999.
After the bombing of Pearl Harbor during WWII, he left his job at Allison’s and enlisted in the US Navy. He served in the Pacific Theater where he flew reconnaissance. His plane was shot down in the Pacific on two different occasions. In one incidence he and his crew were given up for dead. He also flew cover for the USS Indianapolis.
He retired from General Mills in 1979 after a 31 year career.
He is survived by six children: Bill (Judy) Shaw of Indianapolis, Patti (Fred) Huser of Greensburg, Sandra Shaw of Greenwood, Dave (Suzanne) Shaw of Columbus, Michael Shaw of Marietta, GA., and Susan (Eugene) Peters of Greensburg.
He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Stacy (Scott) Shaw McMullen, Stephanie Shaw and Rob Shaw, Christine (Matt) Huser Hygema, Elizabeth (Kelby) Huser Owens, and Matt, Tom, and Andy Shaw. He is also survived by two great-grandsons, Eric and Jake McMullen.
He was preceded in death by one son, James Shaw and one grandson, Christopher Huser.
Visitation will be at the Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home on Monday, February 9, 2009 from 4-8:00 p.m. and Tuesday morning from 9:30-10:30. A Rosary will be prayed on Monday prior to visitation at 3:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Graveside rites will be held by the American Legion and the V.F.W.
Memorials can be made to Hospice, St. Mary’s School, or the Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
