John W. Moeller

John Wm. Moeller, 80, of Greensburg passed away on December 19. He was born on May 16, 1930, in Greensburg, the son of John L. and Dora Hellmich Moeller. He was best known to his friends and family as "Johnny Bill". He was a 1949 graduate of Greensburg High School. John was named to the Indiana High School All-Star Basketball team in 1949. He attended Butler University, played football for the Bulldogs and was a member of the Alpha Lambda Chi fraternity. John also excelled in baseball and was invited to try out for the Cincinnati Reds. He married Marilyn Niehoff on September 25,1954 and celebrated their 56th anniversary this Fall. John retired from the Greensburg Post Office as a rural route carrier after 30 years of service in 1986. Together John and Marilyn started Moeller Homes and oversaw the construction of many homes in the area including those in Moeller Addition, a subdivision in St. Paul, and many in Lee Addition. They were also the founding owners and operators of J & M Storage Units in Greensburg. John was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus for 50 years and the Sons of American Legions. John enjoyed coaching his children's baseball and softball teams, along with other youth basketball teams over the years. John was known to all as an avid sportsman. He enjoyed hunting quail with his son, grandsons and friends. He was a loyal Cincinnati Reds, IU, Purdue and Colts fan. John went to 52 consecutive opening day Reds ballgames. In his later years he spent a good deal of time at the Moeller Farm in Millhousen where he enjoyed time with family and friends through multiple gatherings and reunions . John will be remembered as a devoted husband and father who valued time with family above all else. He loved social gatherings with good music, good food and drink. His sense of humor will be dearly missed by his family and friends that knew him well. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; daughters, Jane (Mike) Smith of Greenwood, Karen (Jerome) Buening of St. Paul, Diane (Jeff) Burns of Greensburg, Nancy (Mike) Ernstes of Marietta, GA, Jan (Ed) Haskamp of Greensburg, Marsha (Randy) Proffitt of Columbus and son John David (Anita) of Greensburg; one brother, Norbert Moeller, Richmond; two sisters, Marita Cherry, Greensburg, Henrietta Carroll, Osgood; 19 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. John is preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers, Walter, Maurice and Bob Moeller. Visitation will be from 3-7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg. A public rosary service will be held on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 23, 2010 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greensburg with Msgr. Harold Knueven officiating. Interment will be held in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the St. Mary's School Building Fund or to the Greensburg Cheer Fund.
