Frederick M. Stark, Jr.

Frederick Marshall Stark, Jr., 93, of Greensburg, Indiana, passed away Saturday, March 30, 2019 with his family and loved ones by his side.  Born July 21, 1925 in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, Fred was the son of the late Mabel and Frederick Stark Sr.

Fred was indeed part of the greatest generation.  In 1943, at the age of 18, he enlisted in the United States Army, and served with the 95 ^th Infantry Division of the Third Army until 1945.  He fought in both the battle for Metz, France (as one of the Iron Men of Metz), and the Battle of the Bulge through the harsh winter of 1944-45, earning both a Silver Star and a Bronze Star for gallantry in action above and beyond the call of duty.  At war’s end, upon his return to Pennsylvania, he earned a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh.  On July 8, 1950, he married Nancy, and together they raised five children, who were a source of tremendous pride and joy to his last days.

Fred’s career was spent in engineering and plant management, at Pittsburgh Coke and Chemical, General Electric and Anaconda Wire and Cable.  Following retirement in 1985, he provided consulting expertise to Delco Remy until 1998.

Upon retirement, Fred was always ready to lend a helping hand.  He volunteered many hours (and many miles!) with the Chesterfield Indiana Fire Department, the Shriners Hospital (transporting children), the AARP (teaching driving skills), and the Madison County Historical Society, where visitors loved seeing him in his military uniform.  His happiest times, however, were spent with his wife Nancy, and his children and grandchildren, traveling in his Airstream, camping, attending special occasions, and driving his beloved Suburban.  He had a great love of animals, in particular his German Shepherds “Wolf” and “King”.  Fred and his family attended First United Methodist Church, and St Matthews United Methodist Church, both in Anderson, Indiana for over thirty years.

Fred is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Nancy (Kinsel), two brothers, Robert and William Stark (Judith), five children, Susan Shields (JJ), Deborah Hollis (Bob), Rebecca Stark, Frederick Stark III (Monika), and Lawrence Stark (Dorothy), five grandchildren, Anna, Matthew, Meredith, Frederick IV and Sarah, and two great-grandchildren, Liam and Lachlan.  Fred was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Helen.

Fred will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, an honor accorded him as a recipient of the Silver Star.
