Martha Moyer, 93, passed away Aug. 30, at her residence at Morning Breeze, Greensburg. Born in Portland, Martha, known to family and friends as Mert, was the only daughter and middle child of Elbon and May Landess.
Martha graduated from Portland High School in 1950, where she led the marching band as a majorette who performed acrobatics while she twirled. After graduation, she worked for the Army at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis until she married James Moyer in 1953 and started their family.
Once the eldest of their three children started school, Martha was employed by the VA hospital in Marion as an administrative secretary. As her children became more active in school, dance lessons, acrobatics lessons, piano lessons, sports and cheer, Martha became secretary to the principal at Westview Elementary in Jonesboro to be able to manage her children’s activities calendar. When her eldest entered junior high, Martha decided to move from behind her secretary desk to the front of the classroom and enrolled at age 35 at Ball State University, earning her Bachelor’s degree in three years with an area major in social sciences education and a minor in business education.
Beginning in 1972, she taught business and served as chair of the department at Mississinewa High School. While there, she returned to Ball State and earned two Master’s degrees, one in school counseling. She then moved from the classroom to the guidance department where she guided and encouraged the students she served to be their best selves with their futures always in mind. Martha retired from education after 19 years.
She spent her retirement years traveling to southern Indiana, central Illinois and northern Ohio to attend her grandsons’ sporting events, school programs, and graduations from elementary school, high school, and college.
In 2007, they moved to Greensburg to be near their first great-grandchild. There, she was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church.
All her life, Martha was a voracious reader and prided herself on working the daily crossword puzzle and cryptogram in ink. Her homemade chicken and noodles were legendary, and family get-togethers were frequent and fun.
Martha is survived by her daughters Kimberly Green of Hilton Head Island, SC, and Kelli (Kevin) Simpkins of Carmel and her son Kevin (Colleen) Moyer of Perrysburg, OH; her grandchildren Jacob (Julie) Green of Indianapolis, Max (Sarah) Simpkins of Indianapolis, James Moyer of Cincinnati, OH, Sean Moyer of Columbus,OH, and Amanda Green of Columbus; and great-grandchildren Annelise Green, Caraline Green, Kathryn Green, Elias Green, Sydney Fessel, Tyler Fessel, Charlie Jane Simpkins, and Calvin Simpkins. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, her husband, her brothers Jerry and Gene Landess, her firstborn grandson Samuel Green, and her son-in-law William Green.
Her family gratefully acknowledges the entire staff at Morning Breeze for the loving care they gave our mom. She truly loved them.
Per Martha’s wishes, private graveside services will be held.
