Melvin L. Harpring

Melvin Louis Harpring, 90, Greensburg, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, February 24, 2022 in Greensburg.

Born, July 28, 1931 in Indianapolis, Indiana, he was the son of Louis and Marie (Schroeder) Harpring.

Melvin graduated from Greensburg High School in 1949.  He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict.

He was a lifelong farmer and had worked at Acro Engineering in Greensburg.

He was quite active in midget racing.  He helped form the UMRA Midget Racing Association.  He served as president and was a board member for several years. He loved hunting, camping, and outdoor activities with his family.

He was married to Roberta (Herbert) Nienaber on July 31, 1971 and she survives.

He is also survived by three children, Ann (Ron) Combs, Christina Harpring, Wayne (Julie) Harpring; one sister, Marlene Harsin; three grandchildren, Nikki, Kylie, and Tyler Harpring.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Rollin Harpring.

Family and friends will gather at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, February 28, 2022 at the Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg to pray the rosary. Visitation will follow until 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. John Meyer officiating. Interment will be held in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Greensburg.
