Melvin E. Robbins

Melvin E. Robbins, 92, lifelong resident of Greensburg, passed away on Friday, August 4, 2017 at the Morning Breeze in Greensburg. Born, November 20, 1924 in Greensburg, Indiana, he was the son of Dola and Luvina (Rathburn) Robbins.  Melvin graduated in 1943 from Greensburg High School.  He served in WW II in the Army Medical Corp.  He received the following medals for his service; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign (participation Normandy Campaign June 6, 1944), two Bronze Stars, Medical Combat Badge, Purple Heart, Prisoner of War, American Campaign, WW II Victory, Lame Duck Combat Pin, Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII, Good Conduct Medal, Diplome, Republic of France, Knight of the Legion of Honor medal, award by the President of the French Republic. After the war he attended Indiana University.  Melvin was a fireman for the Greensburg Fire Department for 30 years.  He served as Assistant Fire Chief for 14 years and retired in 1980.  After his retirement, he worked for over 25 years at the Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home.  Melvin was also a jeweler and worked on watches and clocks up until his death. Melvin was a life member of the VFW #5584, a member of the American Legion #129, Masonic Lodge #36, 32 degree Mason of the Scottish Rite in Indianapolis, Kights of Pythias, a lifetime member of the Conservation Club, and a member of the First Baptist Church. He married Virginia Rosalie Hamer on June 16, 1946 and she preceded him in death on September 23, 2015. He is survived by one daughter, Joretta (Ron) Headlee, Indianapolis; one sister, Gertrude McFarland, Bellbrook, OH; three grandchildren, Shelley Post, David (Brandy) Headlee, Nicole (Kyle) Juday; six great grandchildren and one on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife; one daughter, Darlene Riley; one brother, William Robbins; one sister, Alma Small. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 3 to 8:00 p.m. at the Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg with a Masonic Service to be held at 7:30.  Visitation will also be held on Thursday at the First Baptist Church from 10 to 11:00 followed by the funeral service at 11:00 with Rev. Cliff Bunch officiating. Interment with full military graveside services will be held in the South Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Robbins Memorial Fund at the First Baptist Church.
