Ralph J. Meer

Ralph J. Meer, 84 of Greensburg, IN passed away on June 18th at Arbor Grove Nursing Home. Ralph was born in Rush County on October 14, 1925 to John & Margaret (Peters) Meer. He married H. Carol (Sears) Meer August 16, 1952 at St. Mary’s Church- Greensburg who still survives. Ralph served in the US Army in WWII. He served most of his term in Japan after the bomb was dropped. He served under Gen. Macarthur and was head of and coordinator of the phone system while in Japan. He returned to farming after his discharge from the army. He served as Dec. Co. Sheriff’s deputy under Sheriff Schwendenmann and Sheriff Snyder for 18 ½ years in which he was chief deputy for most of that period . He was voted in as sheriff for 4 years and retired in 1982. He belonged to the VFW, American Legion, Indiana Sheriff Association and FOP of Indiana. Ralph’s favorite things to do was to take the great-grandchildren on rides on his scooter, tell jokes, dump women’s purses, go visit his farms and go to the farmers market on Friday with his granddaughters pulling the great grandchildren in their wagons. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR races, the Colts, the Pacers, and the Cincinatti Red’s ball games. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Reatha (Robert) Thompson of Allen, Texas, Malcolm (Brenda) Meer of Greensburg, and unofficially adopted son James Laudick of Greensburg; his grandchildren Dr. Benjamin (Christine) Meer, Lee (Jennifer) Meer, Liza (Chris) Williams, Tyler Meer, Robert Thompson, Matt Thompson, Monica (Lee) Miller, and Chad Holzhause; his great grandchildren Briar, Zoe, and Patrick Meer, Lucas Williams, Trenton, Ryan, and Caitlin Miller, and Jacob Holzhause. Visitation will be from 4-8:00 p.m. Monday at the Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg. A public rosary service will be held on Monday at 3:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greensburg with Msgr. Harold Knueven officiating. Interment will be held in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Greensburg. Memorials may be made to the St. Mary's Church Building Fund or to the St. Mary's School.
